The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake occurred at 6:32 p.m. and was centered 10 miles south of Searles Valley, east of the Kern County city of Ridgecrest. The agency received reports of people feeling the earthquake throughout the Central Valley, in San Jose, east to Henderson, Nev.; in Phoenix and throughout Southern California to the Mexico border.
There were no immediate reports of damage in Kern County, Sheriff’s Department Lt. Jeff Harbour said. A dispatcher with the Ridgecrest Police Department said there were no immediate reports of damage or injury there.Similarly, there were no reports of damage to Trona or Barstow, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Jodi Miller.A sinkhole reopened on Highway 395 at Brown Road, and crews were patching it up Wednesday night, said Christine Knadler, the public affairs director for Caltrans District 9. She said small rocks tumbled onto Highway 178 in Poison Canyon. That’s the route that connects Ridgecrest and Trona.Janet Cervantes, the manager of the T Stop market in Trona, said in a phone interview that some items were knocked off the shelves, but the damage was nowhere as bad as it was in the 2019 earthquakes. She also said there were rocks on some roads.Kathy Marisol, who works at Red Rock Liquor in Ridgecrest, said no bottles fell off the shelves. She felt the earthquake and described the experience as “crazy.”“It’s crazier here with the shaking. We hear the bottles rattling,” she said.
Wednesday’s quake was an aftershock of that quake, Caltech seismologist Zachary Ross said.“Why is this considered a Ridgecrest aftershock after almost a year? Because the rate of events per day is still way above the rate before the sequence started,” Ross said in a Twitter message. Those 2019 earthquakes knocked homes off foundations, flattened walls, cracked roads and caused water and electrical outages. Some homes were red-tagged as uninhabitable, forcing people to sleep outside. The quakes triggered a massive response from government agencies and other organizations.
