The Modern American Table: Is a Calorie a Calorie?
Weโ€™ve all heard the dictate that a calorie is a calorie regardless of its source. But are all foods truly created equal in terms of how they affect our health and weight?
Given the barrage of competing information directed at us every day, what do we really know about healthy eating?
Robert Lustig, MD, is Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at University of California, San Francisco, and the author of Fat Chance: Beating the Odds against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease.
Christopher Gardner, PhD, Professor (Research) of Medicine is a nutrition researcher at the Stanford Prevention Research Center whose research has been investigating the potential health benefits of various dietary components or food patterns, explored in the context of randomized controlled trials in free-living adult populations

I'd love to hear a lecture about the infiltration in nutrition science education. Lustig mentions that he goes to med school and they beat the new creed into him, but now it's everywhere. I'm finishing up my nutrition education and it's sickening. I've had to memorize what I've been taught just to pass the exams, but learn the truth elsewhere. In my studies they're basically saying "only fat people get type 2, Processed fruit juice is wonderful if you don't want soda, and yes! Ice cream is awesome. You got calcium, and if there's nuts in there then that's good too.." It's like I'm getting my degree from the Sugar Industry University. It's awful.

I know it's addictive, Trust me ... I quit drinking, quit all the drugs, and quit smoking. Sugar truly is in everything, it's everywhere

The bodybuilding Community has known this for decades.

To summarise their methodology:

-Eat whole foods, straight from the earth. E. G. Oatmeal over bread.
-Eat high quality protein. E. G. Free range egg over battery.
-Eat high quality fats. E. G. Omega 3, get the 3/6 ration in check, nuts, seeds etc.
-It isn't just calorie in and out. The body isn't a car, it has a biochemical response to food which impacts numerous facets of the body. E. G. Inflammation.
-The public respond differently to macronutrient ratios. Some people are insulin sensitive so fair better away from too many carbs.
-Excercise will change how the body uses food as fuel.
-Stay away from processed food and sweeteners. Our bodies and brains have not evolved for it.
-Don't overeat. Find your maintenance and eat slightly over for muscle growth, otherwise eat under for fat loss or at maintenance for sustaining. Training all the way through.

I like the reference to likening artificial sweeteners to methodone.ย  I never have like the taste of artificial sweeteners, plus I dont trust them, so I cant consider them an alternative. As a self confessed sugar addict, I am resigned to the fact that I need to realign my taste buds to accept foods tasting less sugary. It is not easy, but with the info I have heard from Lustig, I know there is no other option. I need to do this.

The point is that the whole system is corrupted to the core with all powerful corporations giving us the cheapest most profitable crap they can legally get away with so they can get suitable returns for the shareholders with no regards to the adverse effects !

I remember (politely) arguing with every phys. ed. and anatomy/biology teacher I ever had about calorie equations because you can use your eyes to observe some people eat a lot while expending little energy and they gain less weight than others who eat less and exercise more. IIRC, I took 12 semesters of human anatomy and physiology-related classes in high school and I never heard gut flora mentioned once.
